Mold is not just something you find on food left in the back of your fridge, it can lead to serious health issues. Knowing the signs of having a mold issue can help prevent it from spreading.

Sign One:
Allergies and cold symptoms, such as coughing and sneezing, that persist for long periods of time can be a sign of mold. If you, or one of your family members, have a cold that seems to worsen at home and gets better after long periods of time away, you may be exposed to mold. While this can be potentially hazard’s to your health, the best thing to do is call a mold specialist to find the root of the problem.

Sign Two:
We all know that moldy food has a very distinct smell. Usually when a home has a musty smell that will not go away, it is due to mold. Just because you may not be able to see the mold, does not mean that you are safe. Musty smells usually come from too much moisture which is a breeding ground for mold.

The most obvious of all the signs is seeing mold growth in your house. There are different types of mold that may be growing in your house. Places where you are most likely to see mold is in humid and damp places of your home such as the kitchen, bathroom, crawl space, and or basement. Mold can also come in an assortment of colors and patterns including gray-brown, black, gray-green, white and orange. Always be on the look out and do not brush off a problem spot thinking that it is just soot or dirt.

Sign 4: 
If your home has previously flooded, you should always be on the lookout for signs of mold. Just because the water has dried up, does not mean that everything is safe and sound. Mold after a flood can be a long term process to remove, and needs constant attention. If the water was not dried properly, chances are that there is mold growing in the affected area. Constantly checking the sight for indicators of mold and calling in a professional will help keep your home safe.

Sign 5:
Condensation and water leakage are often indicators that you have mold in your home. Since mold is a fungus, for it to grow it needs a warm and wet environment to thrive. Humidity and condensation present the perfect environment for mold to thrive. Water damage in your home can be in the form of discoloration on your walls, and wallpaper or paint peeling and bubbling. While spores may not always grow on the outside of damaged walls, it can be growing on the inside. This is why when you see any form of water damage it is important to call as licensed professional.
