Step 1- Control Installation
It is important to first check the electrical connection. If the connection is weak, it can most likely cause an odor and is also a fire risk. Checking the drain hose should be the next step. If it seems bent, the flow of water can be reduced and build up water may be moldy.

Step 2- Clean the Door Gasket
A gasket is the black seal that lines the opening of a dishwasher. It is a possibility that this seal once in a while collects food from the plates. It could just be that the seal needs to be wiped down every other day to get rid of the rotten food buildup.

Step 3- Change the Drain Filter
Pieces of food can get caught in the filter and then eventually start decaying. This happens to be the number one cause of dishwasher smells most of the time. To keep it fresh, it is recommended to clean the filter with a sponge and soapy warm water at least twice a month.

Step 4- Clean the Garbage Disposal
When using the garbage disposal, the debris from the food can often get backed up into the dishwasher hose. By disconnecting the hose from the disposal, it would be easier to clean out the hose by using a stiff wire and a damp rag.

Step 5- Vinegar and Baking Soda Method
Being that both these items are cheap and can be found at any local store, this method is the easiest and also the safest. Take a cup of white vinegar and pour it to the bottom of the dishwasher. After that, select the deep cleaning and start the process. The vinegar will break down all the particles and leave the dishwasher fresh.

For the baking soda method, scatter a cup of baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher overnight. In the morning, run an empty cycle and the dishwasher will be left very clean.
